The largest of the Plitvice Lakes, Lake Kozjak, is special in many ways. In addition to being the largest (82 ha) and deepest (47 m) lake, it is also the only one on which tourist boats sail, as well as the only one on which an island (Štefanija’s Island) rises. Kozjak forms the border between the Upper and Lower Lakes, as well as the border between Triassic dolomites and Cretaceous limestones. However, this is where the story only begins …

Lake Kozjak, the largest lake in Plitvice (PLNP Archive)

Lake Kozjak has not always looked like this. Until about 400 years ago, there were two lakes on the site of the one lake we see today. These lakes, like all the others in the Plitvice Lakes system, were separated by a tufa barrier. This barrier, about 400 m wide and about 36 m high, is now 6 m below the surface of the water. It can be seen from the panoramic boat on sunny days as a white obstacle in the dark blue depths.

What happened? How did the barrier end up below the surface of the water when we know that they separate lakes, and magnificent cascades flow over them?

There are two possible theories about the sinking of the barrier, and we can say that in fact the more recent theory has replaced the older one. According to the original theory (Petrik, 1958), the downstream barrier, i.e. the barrier at the end of Lake Kozjak (or the former second lake), which we know today as Kozjački mostovi, grew much faster. With the rise of the downstream barrier, the water level of the upstream lake also rose. At one point, 400 years ago, there was a tipping point when the water level rose so high that it covered the upstream barrier. The downstream barrier continued to grow with the same intensity as before, so the water level continued to rise, and thus the submerged barrier was left deeper and deeper under water. Submerged tufa barriers are found not only in Kozjak, but also in Lakes Milanovac, Gradinsko and Prošćansko, and to a lesser extent in other lakes as well.

In the autumn of 2019, dives along the submerged barrier revealed that the original theory may actually be completely incorrect. More specifically, the divers discovered the point where a part of the barrier probably broke off, thus creating a 4 m deep channel. In this way, the downstream barrier on Kozjački mostovi became the only active barrier on the single Lake Kozjak that was then created. The breaking off of the submerged barrier in Lake Kozjak led to major changes in the system. Not only were two lakes formed into one, but the water level of that lake also rose and thus affected the hydrological conditions.

Cracks in tufa barriers are not a common occurrence, but they are not as rare and unusual as one might think. Tufa is very porous, and therefore susceptible to mechanical damage. As a result of extreme weather conditions, such as sudden and great changes in temperature, great oscillations in water levels due to melting snow and heavy rains, a part of the barrier may crack or even break off. In recent times, we have witnessed several barriers breaking off and it has been shown that the results can be drastic. However, the new views created in this way are only a consequence of natural changes.

The oldest measured tree in the Plitvice Lakes National Park is a common beech (Fagus sylvatica) tree. This common beech tree is more than 569 years old and is one of the oldest trees of this species in Europe. Although its diameter at breast height is only 80 cm, it has reached a great age, which means that the annual growth of this tree is only 0.14 cm.

The great age of this tree in relation to its diameter at breast height indicates that the living conditions (soil, water, light) in the habitat of this species are very scarce, but nevertheless the species, with its own ability to adapt to difficult habitat conditions, has reached a very old age and, instead of large dimensions, has chosen a long life.

The importance of isolating and preserving forest areas that have developed without human influence in order to enable the study of the development pattern of natural forest communities, is also confirmed by the fact that this tree is found in the “Čorkova uvala” rainforest, which is located in the Plitvice Lakes National Park.

Animal cameras or “camera traps” are one of the most effective ways of monitoring wild populations in protected areas and are classified as non-invasive monitoring methods. In addition to protected areas, they are used by hunting associations, among farmers, journalists and everywhere where humans and animals coexist. Non-invasive means that the animal most often does not even know that it is being recorded, so it is not disturbed in any way, while we get reliable confirmation of the presence or activity of the animal we are monitoring. The beginning of the use of cameras for tracking animals dates back to the 19th century. Adapted cameras from that era were triggered by a wire that would be caught by an animal, or the wire would be pulled by a person hidden at a distance so that the animal would not detect him. As technology developed, we have come up with very efficient and affordable devices that produce excellent results and have become a common way of monitoring or tracking animals.

Modern devices are equipped with HD cameras that are activated by an infrared ray (Passive InfraRed) that is interrupted by an animal or any other passer-by. They are equipped with standard or infrared flashes, can record videos, send a captured photo to the recipient via GPRS or MMS, and many other options provided by modern technology. The cameras are powered by rechargeable AA batteries which, if the camera is set up correctly and does not take too many photos, can last a year in nature without needing to be replaced. Each camera has an SD card slot to store photos.

A camera equipped with a flash and a photograph of a lynx at the end of the 19th century.
Source: National Geographic

To get good photos or videos, the camera should be positioned correctly in a suitable location. The micro-location for setting the camera trap is crucial for successfully photographing the animal, since the working range of the camera is from 1 to 20 meters. The locations that give the most results are paths where animals pass, marking areas, dens, watering holes, etc. It is important to clean small twigs in front of the lens because the camera can be activated by grass, branches or leaves moving under wind, which results in many “empty” photos. The SD card becomes full or the batteries run out and the camera becomes useless. Internet needs to be available for devices that have the option of sending photos. The camera should be placed at the height of the target animal’s body, fixed with a tape to a tree or another object and tested. The camera should not be visited too frequently due to contamination of the space near the camera with human odours, especially cameras that regularly send each photo.

Modern camera with GPRS transmission system (PLNP Archive)

In the Plitvice Lakes National Park, the cameras were officially used for the first time in 2011 as part of the project “Grouse of the Plitvice Lakes National Park – distribution and impact of tourist activities”. After that, they became standard equipment both in the implementation of projects and in regular monitoring by the Park’s Expert Service. The largest number of cameras was installed as part of the research on wolves, lynxes and bears. Using the network of cameras throughout the entire area of the Park, we get the locations that the animals often use. They provide key information on where to set the trap for the animal that we want to tag with a GPS collar. Based on the photos from the cameras, we can determine the presence, numbers and migration of all animal species in the Park that the cameras manage to record. The photos are saved in databases and are the basis for further analysis and research.

Water dispersed into thousands of droplets (PLNP Archive)

The mosaic of Plitvice Lakes is connected by cascades into a unique water system. Here, nature played with water and created cascades of the most elaborate shapes, heights and curves. The tufa sedimentation process is responsible for their creation and interesting forms, as well as for the worldwide recognition of the beauty and value of the Plitvice Lakes. Here, the cascades are created by the formation or raising of tufa barriers, so they are so-called rising cascades.

The sedimentation of tufa causes the growth of tufa barriers and cascades (photo: Rade Jug)

According to literature, we should distinguish the term cascade from the term waterfall. A cascade is characterised by the flow of water over a series of cascades, i.e. an overflow or a stepwise descent of running water down rocks or barriers, while a waterfall is characterised by a sudden drop of water in places where there is a sudden change in height. The system of lakes and cascades on the Plitvice Lakes has changed over the years mostly due to the growth and erosion of tufa barriers. Some cascades grow faster, some slower, while some dry up or erode and sometimes it is difficult to define exactly whether it is a cascade or a waterfall, so the names contain the term cascade, even though it is a waterfall.

Due to changes in the flow of water, some parts of the cascade dry up and new cascades are created (PLNP Archive)

The Big Waterfall (PLNP Archive)

Such is the case with the Big Waterfall, the highest waterfall in the Plitvice Lakes National Park, but also in the Republic of Croatia. The height of the waterfall up to the first lake is 62 m, after which the water overflows over several cascades, so the total height of the Big Waterfall to the beginning of the Korana river flow amounts to 87 m. In addition to the Big Waterfall, the lake system contains six other waterfalls or cascades higher than 20 m and another twenty higher than 10 m.

People often use the term “buk” for cascades, which most likely originates from the noise (buka in Croatian) created by cascades, and it is not uncommon to use the term “falls” for a group of several cascades that line up one after the other.

Veliki prštavac – 28 m high cascade, the highest cascade of the Upper lakes (PLNP Archive)

Galovački buk (Photo: Rade Jug)

Great Cascades falls (PLNP Archive)

Whatever you call them, cascades are not only natural obstacles over which water flows, but also small ecological units in which an important part of the life of a lake or watercourse takes place. The vegetation of tufa barriers and cascades, the abundance of oxygen, the supply and retention of organic material are just some of the reasons why numerous animal species, from microscopic organisms, aquatic insects to fish, find their habitat on barriers and cascades.

And man has left traces of his presence on the cascades of our streams and rivers since ancient times. These are the places where it is easiest to cross the watercourse, so bridges and crossings were often built on them, while water energy was used to run mills, sawmills or to produce electricity.

Bogs are moist habitats constantly covered by water, in which organic matter, due to the prevailing conditions, decomposes very poorly. More specifically, it is colder, the soil and plants are constantly saturated with water, and there is a lack of oxygen. In such conditions, deposits of plants, which we call peat, are formed, which additionally contribute to the increase of anoxia and water retention and they slow down decay.

There are basophilic and transitional bogs in the area of the Plitvice Lakes National Park. Basophilic bogs are soaked in water that seeps from the surrounding hills and is retained due to the impermeable substrate. Transitional bogs develop on an acidic substrate (acidophilic bogs) under the predominant influence of the underground water of the acid reaction.

Basophilic bog (PLNP Archive)

Bogs are characterised by a lack of nutrients, which is why we find very few plant and animal species in these habitats that are very well adapted to the conditions prevailing in such habitats.

Basophilic bogs in the Park are dominated by low sedges, and in addition to some orchids and mosses, here we also find the common butterwort, a carnivorous plant. In addition to various bog mosses, on the transitional bogs there are the common cottongrass, star sedge and other interesting plant species, but also two types of carnivorous plants, the lesser bladderwort and the common sundew.

Carnivorous plants are a small group of plants that, due to the lack of nutrients in the soil where they grow, have developed mechanisms for capturing animal prey. These are mostly small insects, so they are often called insectivorous plants. Nine species are known in Croatia, and three species have been recorded in the Park: the common sundew (Drosera rotundifolia), the common butterwort (Pinguicula vulgaris) and the lesser bladderwort (Utricularia minor). All three species grow on the bog habitats of the Park.

The common butterwort Pinguicula vulgaris (PLNP Archive)

The common sundew Drosera rotundifolia (PLNP Archive)

The lesser bladderwort Utricularia minor

(PLNP Archive)

As bogs are remnants from ancient times when the climate was colder and wetter, these habitats are slowly disappearing due to climate change. Here, in the karst area from which the water quickly leaves, it is not even an ideal habitat for them. They have remained in only a few micro-locations and are under the further threat of accelerated disappearance due to human action by drying, due to the succession that creates a shadow for them that the bogs do not tolerate, and the increasingly hotter and drier climate certainly has an impact.

In order to protect the biodiversity of the Park, as well as the whole of Croatia, it is necessary to preserve the bogs. The plant species that live in this type of habitat are few in number, but they are unique, and their loss would significantly affect the diversity and uniqueness of Croatia’s flora.

Mosses (Bryophyta), small plant organisms that never grow independently but in dense clumps in moist habitats (both terrestrial and freshwater), have a very simple structure with a small stem and leaves. However, in case of mosses, these structural elements cannot be attributed to the standard stem and leaf that we see in other plants, and they do not even have a root, but develop rhizoids, filamentous formations with which they attach to the substrate. Also, you will never see a moss flower, but both male and female reproductive organs will develop at the top of its stem, or they will be developed each on a separate plant. Today, around 13,000 species of mosses are known in the world, and their unique evolutionary history spans almost 400 million years. As many as 58 new species of mosses have been found in Croatia in the last 10 years.

Moss structure on the example of the species Barbula crocea (refined in a photo by A. Allegra)

The importance of mosses in freshwater systems such as the Plitvice Lakes and especially in the development of tufa barriers is fascinating. These small plants that grow densely covering certain parts of tufa barriers and cascades, participate as a biological factor in the process of tufa creation; however, but this does not apply to all species of moss, but only to some.

The process of tufa formation, the growth of tufa barriers and ultimately the damming of the lake is a very specific process that involves both chemistry and biology, and one would not be possible without the other.

Mosses play a significant role in the tufa creation process. Mosses, like other plant organisms, create oxygen in the process of photosynthesis. However, terrestrial plants use carbon dioxide (CO2) from the air for this process, while freshwater mosses cannot use carbon dioxide from the air, but use it from dissolved hydrogen carbonate (HCO3–) for photosynthesis. The waters of the Plitvice Lakes are rich in this compound, and at the moment when carbon dioxide is used up for photosynthesis, calcium carbonate crystals (CaCO3) are isolated and tufa is formed! Under favourable conditions, tufa will settle on the moss stem, almost “burying” it, while the moss will continue to grow and look for ways to get water and light. The lower parts will thus remain covered in tufa, and the upper parts without tufa will continue to grow. The lower parts will eventually form tufa with some other plant and animal remains.

The moss Brachythecium rivulare with the lower parts of the plant covered in tufa and the young parts growing out of the tufa sediment (photo: A. Allegro)

Previous research on mosses in the Plitvice Lakes identified 34 species of mosses, but a more recent research conducted from 2016 to 2019 recorded as many as 44 species of mosses on tufa barriers and surrounding cascades. Mosses in places of fast water flow and stronger mechanical action of the water grow, however, with a smaller number of species, which in turn increases towards the peripheral parts of the cascade.

The most common species of moss in the Plitvice Lakes is Palustriella commutata, which participates in the sedimentation of tufa, as well as other species such as Eucladium verticillatum and Ptychostomum pseudotriquetrum as well as Hymenostylium recurvirostrum, which is more common in the Lower lakes.

Moss Palustriellla commutata (photo: A.

The species Didymodon tophaceus can also be found in the Lower lakes, which in previous research was recorded as a significantly more abundant species in several localities, while recent data indicate its rarity and growth only in the most open and unshaded localities, such as the Milka Trnina waterfalls and the Great Waterfall.

Moss Didymodon tophaceus (photo: A.
The value of freshwater mosses for Plitvice Lakes is unquestionable. Their participation in the tufa creation process and the development of fascinating tufa barriers and significant biological diversity contribute to the appearance of the Plitvice Lakes, which we admire and which we want to preserve.

Hidden from prying eyes, the Plitvice Lakes National Park is home to a priceless treasure – a cave garden. A cave garden is a very rare karst formation that may develop under cascades and waterfalls during an intensive tufa formation process. It is formed by numerous tufa cavities, semi-caves and caves.

The Plitvice Lakes cave garden is located below the more than 200 m wide Labudovac barrier (exit barrier of Lake Prošćansko). It is estimated to be between 300 and 1600 years old.

Plitvice Lakes Cave Garden (PLNP Archive)

Unlike the “usual” caves, tufa caves are not formed by rock (or, in this case, tufa) melting, but by closing the cavities within the tufa barrier itself.

The development of the cave garden can be attributed to the specific conditions of the tufa formation process. When the tufa formation process on the barrier begins at the very edge of the cascade (rim of the cascade), over time the tufa grows outwards and downwards, thereby creating a curtain-like shape. When the curtain lowers to the ground, it closes the space inside the barrier and thus creates a tufa cave.

Below the Labudovac cascade, which is more than 20 m high, is the entrance to Janeček’s cave. It is a cave more than 50 m long, consisting of 2 halls and 2 corridors. At the bottom there is a small lake with a depth of up to 0.4 m and a surface area of 12 m2, decorated with numerous stalactites and stalagmites, as well as other tufa decorations.

Back in 1910, Dragutin Franić wrote about this phenomenon: “Under the first veiled (net-like) waterfalls at the foot of the rocks of Lake Prošćansko, several untouched dripstone caves and caverns have been found, the bottom of which is under water. The water is of “a beautiful dark or dull blue colour”… You enter larger and smaller caves until you reach the largest cave called “the Chapel”. The ceiling of this cave is beautiful, and it seems to be formed by massive rows of larger and smaller pearls as well as all kinds of other dripstone formations, which resemble the most delicate works of art or filigree work. “With the exception of the Lower lakes, it is the most wonderful part of Plitvice.”

Today, a part of the cascade covers the entrance itself, so it is no longer possible to enter the cave.

The Labudovac barrier cave garden is not the only tufa cave in the Park. Many are hidden (and undiscovered) under active cascades. When there is a change in the water flow when, for example, a part of the barrier breaks off, smaller or larger cavities are often discovered that hide a real treasure – tufa caves.

They fly with their hands, and see with their ears!

Bats are the only mammals capable of true flight. Their front limbs have evolved into wings. They can be found on all continents except Antarctica and some oceanic islands. Around 1,100 different species of bats have been documented in the world. Of which 34 can be found in Croatia, and 22 have been identified so far in the Plitvice Lakes National Park. All bat species in Croatia are protected!

All European bat species, 45 of them, feed on insects and are as such extremely helpful. One bat can eat around 1,000 insects in one night, which is why they are known as the best pesticides because they hunt at night, when the insect species most harmful to agriculture are active. Guano (bat droppings) is considered one of the best fertilisers.

Nyctalus noctula (Photo: Karolina Kipson)

They hunt at night. For them, the daytime is fraught with danger as the sun dries their wings and birds attack them. They use a unique system of orientation – echolocation that allows them to orientate based on echoes coming from call reflections in objects, which bats pick up using their ears. This system is so well developed that at night bats can even “see” mosquitoes in flight. Echolocation allows them to hunt and navigate space.

During daytime and winter, they stay in shelters (caves, pit caves, roofs on houses, tree hollows), usually hanging upside down or in an inaccessible place. Shelters serve to protect them from the weather and predators.

Bats under a roof (PLNP Archive)

During summer, female bats give birth in their shelters usually to a single young. Several hundred or thousand bats can form such a community, known as a maternity colony. At night, when the mother go hunting, they place their young in “kindergartens”, a place in the colony where many small bats hang in a pile, waiting for their mothers and kept safe by several adult female bats who don’t leave to hunt that night.

Rhinolophus euryale, Miniopterus schreibersii (Photo: Marina Kipson)

Despite the size of their bodies, bats are the longest-lived mammals. The oldest bat documented was 41 years old. Our bat species weigh between 5 and 45 g.

The main reasons why they are endangered are: loss of habitat for hunting, loss of winter and daytime shelters, as well as maternity colony shelters, treating of timber with toxic protective chemicals, pesticides, small numbers of insects, exploiting caves for tourism purposes, disturbing maternity and hibernating colonies, wind farms, drying up of water bodies and water pollution.

Bats are not dangerous animals, and they won’t attack humans. Due to their well-developed echolocation system, they are great at detecting even the smallest objects in their surroundings so they will never get tangled in your hair. If a bat flies into a room, the best you can do is open the windows, turn off the lights and leave it by itself for some time so that it can fly out without any disturbance.
