Bogs habitats are an important component in national and international strategies on biodiversity, climate change mitigation and water regulation. The largest areas of bogs are located in the north, and they present typical vegetation of Northern and Atlantic Europe. Unfortunately, due to numerous threats, they are disappearing at an alarming rate.

Croatia is among the countries where the percentage of bog habitats is less than 0.4%.

In Croatia, these are relict habitats (remains from the Ice Age) that have survived in micro-locations where the climate is colder and wetter. In the Plitvice Lakes National Park, there are two types of bogs: transition mires and quaking bogs (7140) and alkaline fens (7230), and they are targeted in the Park as Natura habitat types.

Numerous rare and interesting species are found living in them, among others carnivorous plants unique in the plant world.
