• D429: from the county border (Korana Bridge) to the settlement Selište Drežničko (D42); and
• D42: from the village of Poljanak to the villages Selište Drežničko and Grabovac.

We ask all the visitors and participants of the Plitvice Marathon for their understanding and to respect the temporary traffic regulations in order to ensure the safety of all the participants and visitors of the event. During that period, traffic will be diverted to alternative routes: Grabovac — Ličko Petrovo Selo — Prijeboj and vice versa, in order to reduce crowding and enable the smooth running of the Plitvice Marathon.

Faster and easier ticket purchase

In March 2025, ticket vending machines were installed at Entrances 1 and 2 of the national park. These devices enable faster and easier on-site purchase of admission tickets for the same day or the following day, while relieving ticket offices and reducing queues at the entrances. The initiative has been very positively received. In the future, we also plan to enable the collection of group tickets, allowing digitalisation to deliver faster service, greater flexibility and more efficient management of large visitor numbers.

Flexible Visit Planning for an Additional Web Shop Fee

Given the number of enquiries from visitors wishing to change or cancel their visit date at short notice, from July 2025 park visitors have been offered the option to purchase tickets with the flexibility to change or cancel the selected date for an additional fee of €5.00. This provides visitors with greater peace of mind should their travel circumstances change.

Introduction of Specialised Cameras for Counting Park Exits

For several years, various system upgrades and measures have been implemented to reduce the pressure of high visitor numbers on the park’s lake area. As this is an ongoing process, new opportunities for improvement continue to emerge over time. New specialised cameras, fully compliant with GDPR requirements, will be used to count visitor exits from the park. This will allow for more accurate monitoring of visitor numbers within the system, timely opening and closing of additional time slots, an improved visitor experience, and a partial reduction in pressure on nature and the environment.

A Visit Adapted for People with Hearing Impairments

The project “Nature for All in Sign Language”, which Plitvice Lakes National Park joined in 2024, was implemented during 2025 with the aim of improving access to information for deaf and hard-of-hearing visitors. QR codes and video materials in Croatian and international sign language have been placed throughout the park in the form of stickers and integrated into the park’s mobile application.

Improved Mobile Park Application

During 2025, the existing Plitvice Lakes National Park mobile application was upgraded, enabling visitors to purchase park tickets directly. The content has been expanded, and the application now allows users to stay informed about all important notifications.

Fast Mobile Phone Charging Stations

As the need to recharge mobile phones has become increasingly common, Plitvice Lakes National Park has responded by installing fast charging stations for mobile phones. These 35 W charging stations were installed at the end of 2025 at two locations: the information office at Entrance 1 and the auxiliary Entrance 2 – Flora. Each station offers 16 secure compartments with easy access via a personal code, and the service is free of charge for all visitors.

A New Generation of Electric Boats Is Coming

In response to visitor suggestions to increase the number of boats and reduce waiting times at boat piers within the park, all necessary documentation to expand fleet capacity was secured during 2025. Three modern electric-powered boats, equipped with solar panels on their roofs, are currently under construction, with the aim of maximising the use of clean energy and reducing environmental impact.

Installation of Air Conditioning Units at Hotel Jezero

In 2025, modern air conditioning units were installed in the rooms of Hotel Jezero, the largest hotel within Plitvice Lakes National Park, to ensure a more comfortable stay for guests. Although the hotel is located in the greenery of the national park and only a five-minute walk from Lake Kozjak, the largest Plitvice lake, the need for air conditioning has increased over time due to summer heat and year-round temperature fluctuations. We believe that many guests of Hotel Jezero will welcome this improvement during their next stay.

Culinary Training at the Kul In Culinary Institute

In March 2025, chefs from various catering facilities within Plitvice Lakes National Park attended culinary training at the Kul In Culinary Institute. As the oldest private culinary school in the region, the institute has received numerous awards and cooperates with more than 60 restaurants and hotels from over 50 countries. Participants had the opportunity to refine their culinary techniques in the preparation of à la carte dishes and to exchange experience with leading professionals in the field. This training directly contributes to higher-quality dishes and greater guest satisfaction with the park’s gastronomic offer.

Visitor surveys continued throughout 2025, providing ongoing insight and reminding us that improvement is always possible. As we continue to monitor feedback from our visitors, we look forward to new results and hope that the improvements implemented will contribute to an even more enjoyable visitor experience in the coming year.

This semi-aquatic species is found across most of Europe. It is a carnivore and prefers fish, although it also eats crustaceans, birds, amphibians, and other smaller mammals it is able to catch. It inhabits all types of freshwater habitats, and is also found along the sea coast. Otters are very shy and elusive animals, making them hard to spot. It is easiest to spot them at dusk and dawn, when their activity peaks.

OIKON d.o.o. conducted the research on otters in the Park area between 2019 and 2022 in cooperation with the Park’s Professional Service Department. The research aimed to assess the size and condition of otter populations and individual otters, to determine which space they use and to record potential threats. Monitoring of otters is still ongoing.

The relatively large number of about 25 individuals (confirmed through DNA analysis of the collected samples) indicates that the Park area offers an ideal habitat for this species.

The circular economy is key in the fight against plastic. It would simply mean that we need to rethink the way we design, make, use and reuse plastic. The design of a plastic product should be made in such way that it can be used more than once and recycled until the end of its “lifetime”.

In our protected area, you will find waste bins were you can separate waste by plastic, glass, cans, mixed waste and biowaste so we encourage you to use it. In our hospitality services you will find a biodegradable packaging as a part of our phasing out the plastic packaging.

Protected Areas are more than just boundaries on a map—they are living, thriving systems where everything is connected. From the plants and animals that call them home to the people who live in, care for and shape these landscapes, everyone has a role in this shared “partnership of life.” But the health of these areas doesn’t stop at the borders of Protected Areas. What happens beyond their boundaries deeply influences the ecosystems within.

So it’s clear that we all need to work together to achieve the best outcomes for nature and people, and to ensure the resilience of these special places in a changing world.

At Plitvice Lakes National Park, we will again this year introduce our young people to the conservation of our rich natural heritage with the “Junior Rangers” educational program. We will conduct the program on May 26 with about 40 8th grade students from Plitvička Jezera Elementary School and Eugen Kvaternik Elementary School (Rakovica).

By raising interest in nature conservation among young people, we give our protected areas and the preservation of natural heritage a bright future, and we think this is the right way to celebrate the European Day of Parks.

We celebrate it every year on the day of the acception of the Convention on Biological Diversity. This year´s theme is “Harmony with Nature and Sustainable Development”.

Three-quarters of terrestrial habitats and about 66% of the marine environment have been significantly modified by human activity. Millions of plant and animal species are threatened with extinction. Human survival and well-being are linked to biodiversity. Negative trends, species and habitat loss and ecosystem destruction could undermine economic progress and significantly impact the sustainable development of the Planet.

To avoid the collapse of natural resources and civilization as we know, humanity must align the use of natural goods with the goals of sustainable development. The IDB 2025 campaign seeks to draw particular attention to the link between the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF), a universal program that must be implemented together with the recently (2024) adopted Pact for the Future.

In order to pay tribute to all those who participated in the challenging establishment of the Natura 2000 network, celebrate and emphasize its values, the European Union declared 21 May as Natura 2000 Day. The Habitats Directive was adopted on the same day in 1992, which, along with the Birds Directive adopted in 1979, forms the legal basis of the ecological network.

Benefits of the Natura 2000 network:

• For nature: Protection and recovery of more than 1200 rare and endangered species, as well as more than 230 habitat types
• For people: Vital services such as drinking water, pollinating insects, protection from floods, erosion and climate change
• For the economy: Ecosystem services worth between 200 and 300 billion euros, livelihoods maintained (4.4 million jobs).

The Natura 2000 network does not advocate a strict conservation regime or the cessation of development activities, but rather, it seeks to enable the coexistence of humans and nature through set goals and conservation measures specific to each area.

Plitvice Lakes National Park is one of the hundred World Heritage Sites included in the Natura 2000 network. It has been recognized as an area important for wild species and habitat types (identification number HR5000020), as well as an area important for bird conservation (HR1000020). The Park area is an invaluable habitat for 28 plant and animal species and 21 bird species from the Natura 2000 network list. The management mechanisms and the goals and measures from the Park’s 2019–2028 Management Plan facilitate the protection and conservation of the species not only in Croatia, but in Europe as well.

The EU has launched the Bioblitz campaign to promote the Natura 2000 Day. The campaign aims to promote the Natura network areas of your choice. You can join the campaign individually, as a family, a group of friends, nature-lovers and scientists, or through an organization or institution (for example, the Plitvice Lakes National Park public institution etc.).

Renewable energy sources can improve people’s standard of living, especially when it comes to health. Namely, it has been confirmed that air pollution from the combustion of fossil fuels is linked to heart attacks, respiratory problems and asthma. Given that renewable energy sources contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, which are mostly caused by the combustion of fossil fuels, it is clear that using these forms of energy mitigates climate change. Climate change, or the climate crisis in which humanity finds itself, is manifested in extreme weather conditions, heat waves and the spread of infectious diseases, as well as in rising air and water temperatures. All ecosystems are threatened by these changes and only healthy and preserved ecosystems will have the best chance of adapting to climate change. The economic benefits of switching to renewable energy sources are also important, both through the creation of new jobs and through the generation of income and investment.

In our Plitvice Lakes National Park, we will mark Earth Day with an educational program “What’s happening to the climate?” with 6th grade elementary school students from the Rakovica, Plitvice Lakes and Korenica area, as in previous years.

Finally, through the main message of this year’s Earth Day, it is very clear that the power of people is the driving force behind every change for the benefit of the entire planet!
