The circular economy is key in the fight against plastic. It would simply mean that we need to rethink the way we design, make, use and reuse plastic. The design of a plastic product should be made in such way that it can be used more than once and recycled until the end of its “lifetime”.

In our protected area, you will find waste bins were you can separate waste by plastic, glass, cans, mixed waste and biowaste so we encourage you to use it. In our hospitality services you will find a biodegradable packaging as a part of our phasing out the plastic packaging.

“Our Land. Our Future. We are #GenerationRestoration”

In 1973, June 5 was declared World Environment Day to raise awareness of the critical environmental issues, from climate change to the depletion of the ozone layer, and to highlight these issues in public spaces. Ever since, June 5 is the day when governments, businesses, civil society associations and individuals all around the world come together to turn the spotlight on different environmental issues.

The theme of this year’s World Environment Day is focused on land restoration, curbing desertification (land degradation and loss of vegetation cover in arid and semi-arid areas) and increasing drought resilience under the slogan “Our Land. Our Future. We are #GenerationRestoration”. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia will host the 2024 World Environment Day.

Why was this theme chosen for World Environment Day? Here are some of the main reasons:

• Globally, more than 2 billion hectares of land are degraded.
• An estimated 12 million hectares of land are lost to degradation every year, impacting food and water supplies across the globe.
• 55 million people are directly affected by droughts every year, making drought a serious threat to agriculture and livestock.
• It is estimated that, by 2030, land degradation and desertification could force 135 million people to migrate.
• Land degradation can interrupt the natural processes of the Earth, causing soil erosion and clean water shortages. It is also one of the factors causing the loss of millions of species.
• Climate change influences desertification and land degradation by increasing the frequency and severity of droughts, heatwaves and wildfires.

To encourage change for the better and initiate activities that could hinder the development of even more serious problems, experts have established that restoring at least 15% of land in the right places could help avoid losing 60% of species linked to extinction. In addition, conserving ecosystems such as forests, wetlands and rivers helps counter climate change and enhances climate resilience. Another positive initiative is the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021–2030), a global rallying call for the revival and restoration of damaged and disrupted natural areas, set up to restore 1 billion hectares of land!

The celebration of World Environment Day is active since 1974, and on every June 5^th under different themes important for environment protection, we are trying to raise awareness on causes and consequences of many changes that we witness. This year is very important because it marks the 50 years since United Nations Conference on the Human Environment (the Stockholm Conference) when the first international meeting on the environment was held. For that reason, Sweden is this year`s host country for all the important activities regarding World Environment Day.

The slogan for the World Environment Day in 2022 is Only One Earth, same as the slogan in 1972 for Stockholm Conference, and the main goal is to encourage thinking and to raise awareness that there is no other planet for our lives. With that in mind, we should direct our capacities towards the conservation of all natural world, plant and animal species, terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems, seas and oceans in order to preserve our only home. Parts of the environment such as soil, air and water are key elements without which our life would not be possible on this planet.  What will we do to protect the planet, how will we affect the future of people and planet, and other similar questions are important to have in mind not just in global sense but also to start from oneself as an individual and search for answers.

With dear students from 1^st to 4^th grade of Elementary school “Plitvička Jezera”, we held an educational program “The climate is changing”. The students were introduced with rules of behaviour in protected area and meteorological station, and they learned about the differences between weather and climate. Then we talked about what is causing climate change and what the greenhouse gases are, and finally through short experiment they measured temperatures of different objects in their surrounding and monitored changes. Objava World Environment Day – Only One Earth pojavila se prvi puta na Nacionalni park "Plitvička jezera".

On Friday, 11 June 2021, a children’s show was held at 10:45 a.m. on the playground of the Plitvička Jezera Primary School in Mukinje. The show, titled “Our green world”, was performed by the “Smješko” theatre, and younger children from the Plitvička Jezera Primary School and the Slapić Kindergarten (Korenica and Mukinje) attended, around 50 children in total.

This cheerful, outdoor eco-educational theatrical performance teaches preschool children and younger schoolchildren about proper recycling and ecology in an interesting and fun way. It touches upon recycling using interactive play to teach children about nature conservation, steps they can take to reduce the amount of trash, ways of recycling unnecessary things, and the types of recyclable waste.

An interesting and impressive performance by academic actress Mirta Zečević taught the children how Earth was created, what rain is, and how the first life arose. But our beautiful Earth needs our help… People have created too much garbage and are constantly polluting Earth… The message of the play is: Let us learn all about waste separation together with Earth!

In this way, by teaching the young to care for the environment and preserve Earth, we celebrate World Environment Day together: Plitivička Jezera National Park, Slapić Kindergarten, and Plitvička Jezera Primary School.
