This year we are also celebrating the 47th anniversary of international significance – the day this piece of earthly paradise was included on the UNESCO World Natural Heritage List.

The message of this largest volunteer action, when the lights in the main squares of cities and recognizable landmarks are turned off for one hour, is that planetary ecosystems are at the brink of endurance and that it is necessary to change our relationship with nature. The latest WWF Living Planet Report (2024) describes that the largest decline in the global index was observed for freshwater (-85%), terrestrial (-69%), and marine ecosystems (-56%).

Precisely because of these changes that we are witnessing, it is extremely important to take time at least every day in your life to have some kind of positive impact on our planet:

World Water Day, which we celebrate every year on March 22, was established by the United Nations in 1993 to raise awareness of the importance of water to our lives and the need for its sustainable use. Around 71% of our planet is made up of water, but only 2.5% of it is freshwater, of which only 1% is available for use. Water is not evenly distributed across the globe, leaving almost 2.2 billion people without access to safe drinking water today. Climate change and steady population growth further increase the water crisis and require urgent action.

The theme of this year’s celebrations is Water and Gender. It highlights the harsh realities of daily life, as water scarcity and lack of sanitation disproportionately affect women and girls, especially in many regions where poverty, gender inequality, and water scarcity are closely linked. Without safe water, sanitation and hygiene close to home, women and girls bear a heavier burden than men and boys. In eight out of ten households facing water scarcity, women and girls are responsible for collecting water.  They care for people made sick by unsafe water. They lose time, health, safety, and opportunities. And, they are often left out of decision-making. Furthermore, access to safe sanitation is essential for women’s health.

This makes the global water crisis a women’s crisis.

It’s time to centre women and girls in water solutions – not only as users, but as leaders, engineers, farmers, scientists, caregivers and changemakers. Because when women and girls are empowered to play their full role alongside men and boys, everyone thrives.

That’s why this year’s campaign is called ‘Where water flows, equality grows’.

Water plays a particularly important role in the Plitvice Lakes National Park. It creates tufa barriers, waterfalls and lakes, is a habitat for numerous plants and animals, and serves to supply drinking water and other human needs. That is why every year, on World Water Day, we also remind ourselves of the need to protect and conserve freshwater ecosystems. We have also used this opportunity for many years to inform eighth-graders from local elementary schools about the waters in our park, the problems associated with freshwater and the theme of World Water Day through presentations and workshops.

Protected area management effectiveness (PAME) is defined by the World Commission on Protected Areas as an assessment of how well a protected area is managed, i.e. to what extent the protected area conserve its values ​​and achieves its established objectives. Effective protected area management is the basis for achieving long-term biodiversity conservation, but despite the established protected areas of which there are more than 140,000 in the European Union and Natura 2000 areas of which there are more than 25,000, the mere designation and establishment do not ensure success in preserving all values.

It is for this reason that the LIFE PAME-Europe project was launched with the aim of establishing a framework for a European-wide system for monitoring and assessing the effectiveness of protected area management. The project partners are EUROPARC Federation (Europe), DHP Conservation S.R.O. (Czech Republic), Metsähallitus, Parks & Wildlife Finland (Finland), Nationale Naturlandschaften EV (Germany) and Department de Territori, Habitatge i Transició Ecològica (Spain). The project runs from 2024-2028, and the testing phase of the tool or framework for assessing the management effectiveness of pilot sites across Europe, but also outside the European Union, is from 2026 to 2027. Pilot areas participate at the level of the site itself, individually, for example a protected area or Natura 2000 area, while other pilot areas are represented at the system level (ministries, agencies) that test the tool for, for example, all protected areas under their jurisdiction.

The pilot sites have a task to test the tool in the coming period through a self-assessment process, but also through online workshops, while the support of the project team is provided. Within the given deadlines, covered chapters will include checking and supplementing data with site information, conservation objectives, pressures, conservation measures, monitoring and conservation outcomes.

We will continue the project activities in the coming period with online training on the European Nature Academy platform, which will support participants on this exciting journey. We hope that the experience of participating in and implementing this PAME-Europe Framework will provide us with additional experience needed in the development of a new Management Plan.

This year’s 41th Plitvice Marathon will take place on June 6th and 7th and this year runners may choose between a 5K (Plitvička petica) race, Wannabe 10 (9 kilometres) a half-marathon (21 kilometres), and a marathon (42 kilometres). The Plitvice Marathon is the oldest, greenest and most beautiful race in Croatia with more and more runners joining every year.

The Plitvice Marathon is one of the most popular races in Croatia, offering competitors the opportunity to run just above the Big Waterfall and alongside crystal-clear lakes. Because of their extraordinary natural beauty, these lakes have always attracted nature lovers. This year we will celebrate 77 years since Plitvice Lakes were declared a national park and 47 years since they were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List.

As before, this year’s Plitvice Marathon will be a part of the competition calendar of the First Croatian Road League, in cooperation with the Croatian Athletics Federation.

The number of competitors is limited to 2000 : 500 at the half-marathon, which will be held to commemorate the late Valentina Valjak, winner of the 35th Plitvice Marathon, 500 at the marathon, 500 at the Wannabe 10 and 500 at the 5K race. Every competitor will receive a starting package which includes a ticket to the National Park.

Running through the largest and the oldest national park in Croatia is a special experience, both physically and spiritually, so get your running shoes ready and join us at this spectacular sports event. Faster and easier ticket purchase

In March 2025, ticket vending machines were installed at Entrances 1 and 2 of the national park. These devices enable faster and easier on-site purchase of admission tickets for the same day or the following day, while relieving ticket offices and reducing queues at the entrances. The initiative has been very positively received. In the future, we also plan to enable the collection of group tickets, allowing digitalisation to deliver faster service, greater flexibility and more efficient management of large visitor numbers.

Flexible Visit Planning for an Additional Web Shop Fee

Given the number of enquiries from visitors wishing to change or cancel their visit date at short notice, from July 2025 park visitors have been offered the option to purchase tickets with the flexibility to change or cancel the selected date for an additional fee of €5.00. This provides visitors with greater peace of mind should their travel circumstances change.

Introduction of Specialised Cameras for Counting Park Exits

For several years, various system upgrades and measures have been implemented to reduce the pressure of high visitor numbers on the park’s lake area. As this is an ongoing process, new opportunities for improvement continue to emerge over time. New specialised cameras, fully compliant with GDPR requirements, will be used to count visitor exits from the park. This will allow for more accurate monitoring of visitor numbers within the system, timely opening and closing of additional time slots, an improved visitor experience, and a partial reduction in pressure on nature and the environment.

A Visit Adapted for People with Hearing Impairments

The project “Nature for All in Sign Language”, which Plitvice Lakes National Park joined in 2024, was implemented during 2025 with the aim of improving access to information for deaf and hard-of-hearing visitors. QR codes and video materials in Croatian and international sign language have been placed throughout the park in the form of stickers and integrated into the park’s mobile application.

Improved Mobile Park Application

During 2025, the existing Plitvice Lakes National Park mobile application was upgraded, enabling visitors to purchase park tickets directly. The content has been expanded, and the application now allows users to stay informed about all important notifications.

Fast Mobile Phone Charging Stations

As the need to recharge mobile phones has become increasingly common, Plitvice Lakes National Park has responded by installing fast charging stations for mobile phones. These 35 W charging stations were installed at the end of 2025 at two locations: the information office at Entrance 1 and the auxiliary Entrance 2 – Flora. Each station offers 16 secure compartments with easy access via a personal code, and the service is free of charge for all visitors.

A New Generation of Electric Boats Is Coming

In response to visitor suggestions to increase the number of boats and reduce waiting times at boat piers within the park, all necessary documentation to expand fleet capacity was secured during 2025. Three modern electric-powered boats, equipped with solar panels on their roofs, are currently under construction, with the aim of maximising the use of clean energy and reducing environmental impact.

Installation of Air Conditioning Units at Hotel Jezero

In 2025, modern air conditioning units were installed in the rooms of Hotel Jezero, the largest hotel within Plitvice Lakes National Park, to ensure a more comfortable stay for guests. Although the hotel is located in the greenery of the national park and only a five-minute walk from Lake Kozjak, the largest Plitvice lake, the need for air conditioning has increased over time due to summer heat and year-round temperature fluctuations. We believe that many guests of Hotel Jezero will welcome this improvement during their next stay.

Culinary Training at the Kul In Culinary Institute

In March 2025, chefs from various catering facilities within Plitvice Lakes National Park attended culinary training at the Kul In Culinary Institute. As the oldest private culinary school in the region, the institute has received numerous awards and cooperates with more than 60 restaurants and hotels from over 50 countries. Participants had the opportunity to refine their culinary techniques in the preparation of à la carte dishes and to exchange experience with leading professionals in the field. This training directly contributes to higher-quality dishes and greater guest satisfaction with the park’s gastronomic offer.

Visitor surveys continued throughout 2025, providing ongoing insight and reminding us that improvement is always possible. As we continue to monitor feedback from our visitors, we look forward to new results and hope that the improvements implemented will contribute to an even more enjoyable visitor experience in the coming year.
