Which tour programme should you choose?

If you are planning to visit this fairytale park, it is important to know which tour programs you can choose in order to make the most of the time spent here. There are eight tour programs in the Park, which means that there is a suitable program for each visitor. Visitors entering the Park at Entrance 1 are given a choice of four tour programs marked in green on the information boards. Entrance 2 serves as the starting point for four programs marked in orange. The tours are available in various durations, ranging from a few hours to full-day trips, giving visitors the opportunity to choose the option that best suits their wishes.

Programs A, B, and F lead you on an exploration of the Lower Lakes of the National Park. The tour begins at Entrance 1 or Entrance 2 and then follows marked trails leading to beautiful waterfalls, bridges, and viewpoints along the Lower Lakes. These programs are suitable for visitors with limited time or those who prefer an easier walk. Program E includes a short boat ride across Lake Kozjak, followed by a walk upstream to Lake Prošćansko. The panoramic train takes you back to the starting point. With programs C and H, you will explore the Upper and Lower Lakes and be able to visit all the magical places within the Park in the shortest time possible. Unfortunately, recent studies found that the Plitvice Lakes ichthyofauna had changed significantly owing to anthropogenic activities. The changes are mostly reflected in the introduction of alien species which have become dominant in the lakes. In addition to the direct impact of the alien species as competition and predators, the negative impact on the indigenous species is also reflected in the changes in habitat conditions, which have become suboptimal or entirely unsuitable, possibly even lethal for individuals of the indigenous species.

The first project to remove the invasive fish species in the Plitvice Lakes National Park was carried out in 2021, and the activities are still ongoing today. Harvesting activities are carried out every month from April to October.

The project “Removal of Invasive Fish Species in the Plitvice Lakes National Park” has been carried out by the Faculty of Science of the University of Zagreb, the public institution AQUATIKA – Karlovac Freshwater Aquarium and the employees of the Park’s expert service. The main purpose of the project is to harvest the alien species of fish from the Plitvice Lakes National Park watercourses and to re-establish adequate conditions for indigenous species and ensure their survival.

Fens are relics from the colder periods in Earth’s history. They are also major carbon stores and contribute significantly to combating climate change. Today they are facing extinction mostly owing to climate change, changes in the water regime, desiccation and succession.

The employees of the Park’s expert service have been monitoring this species for years in order to identify potential threats and be able to react in time.

This is a globally critically endangered species. It is a target Natura 2000 species for the area of the Plitvice Lakes National Park.

It is one of the slowest growing plants in the world, taking between six and eleven years to produce flowers and seeds. In order for the seed to sprout, the ground containing the seed must also contain a special type of fungus that provides nutrients needed for sprouting.

In Croatia, this plant is found in the area of Gorski Kotar and Lika. Only a few populations with a small number of individuals have been found in the Park area.

The employees of the Park’s expert service have been monitoring this species for years in order to determine any changes in the number and the population status, and to identify threats.

 Ten beaver lodges and around twenty beaver individuals have been found in the watercourses and lakes in the Plitvice Lakes. Beaver monitoring in the Plitvice Lakes began in 2019 and is ongoing today. OIKON d.o.o. and the employees of the Park’s expert service are monitoring and studying this species. The aim is to determine the number of individuals, the population status and the biology of this species in the Park area.

One of the finest examples is Lička kuća, a restaurant that has been preserving the flavours of Lika for more than half a century. Its authentic setting, which perfectly captures the spirit of Lika’s traditions, provides the perfect backdrop for dishes prepared according to recipes passed down through generations. Of the total number of respondents, the share of men is 54.7%, and the share of women is 45.3%. Considering the age structure of the respondents, the largest share of visitors is under 25 years old (21.3%), followed by 25-34 years old (19.7%) and between 35-44 years old (19.0%), while the smallest share of participants is over 65 years old.

Satisfaction with sustainability measures related to the protection of nature and animals was expressed by the participants in the highest percentage as extremely satisfied (42.5%), with an increase compared to 2024 (39.5%). At the same time, the share of respondents who were completely dissatisfied decreased, from 6.9% to 4.8%. This is certainly confirmation of the good direction of preserving the natural values ​​of the national park, which is also recognized by visitors.

In the survey results, no significant differences were observed between 2024 and 2025 in the shares of extremely satisfied visitors with the sustainability measures of drinking water and energy consumption, the presence of local products, and human health and safety, and all three measures are characterized by a decrease in the share of completely dissatisfied visitors.

A slight increase in the share of extremely satisfied visitors with measures for waste disposal and/or separation, and a decrease in the share of completely dissatisfied visitors, was observed for 2025 compared to 2024.

A slight decrease in the share of respondents who are extremely satisfied with the sustainability measure of using biodegradable packaging was observed for 2025 compared to 2024, however, the share of those who are satisfied and neutral increased. Visitors recognized this measure of sustainability and the share of respondents who are completely dissatisfied decreased in 2025.

Last year, visitors recognized and expressed their satisfaction with getting to know local traditions (dance, song, customs) as exceptional, and the share increased from 15.5% to 17.2%.

Surveys are still active in our visitor system and we certainly encourage our visitors to complete them because these satisfaction analyses help improve and work on increasing the quality of visiting our most beautiful national park.
