Every year, since 1931, World Animal Day is celebrated on October 4th. This date was chosen because it coincides with the feast day of Saint Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals.

The goal of this day is to raise awareness among people about the importance of animals in our daily lives, their protection, and their well-being. The emphasis is on the need to reduce violence, sadism, and human selfishness towards animals, both pets and animals raised for food, as well as wild animals. Ultimately, the essence of this day is to understand and celebrate life in all its forms.

In the area of the Plitvice Lakes National Park, which is characterized by untouched nature and diverse habitats, numerous animal species have found their home. With over 160 bird species, 22 bat species, 80 butterfly species, and 12 amphibian species, the park showcases the immense diversity of fauna.

Throughout the year, the Plitvice Lakes National Park strives to preserve the plant and animal life in all its diversity and richness. By conserving habitats, caring for the environment, monitoring the status of numerous species, and providing care for every individual animal in need, the park makes every day an Animal Protection Day.
