Indigenous breeds

Lika Pramenka sheep

Numerous rare, endangered, and endemic species and their habitats have remained preserved in this area due to traditional agricultural practices. This is also the reason why some indigenous breeds survived. One of the indigenous breeds whose flocks can still be spotted on the spacious grasslands of the Park (Homoljačko field, Drakulić river and Korenička Kapela region) is Lika Pramenka sheep (Figure 1). The population in the Park consists of around 400 sheep. It was bred in the mountain regions of Lika and Gorski kotar on spacious natural pastures rich in vegetation and under harsh winter conditions (the cold and malnutrition). The significance of the breed are its unique genome, adaptability and resistance, production of animal products (meat and milk), high demand for its products (Lika lambs), and the use and prevention of the succession of natural grassland areas and the possibility of its integration in the protected area management system.
