On 22 May 1992, the  United Nations General Assembly adopted the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). To commemorate this occasion and support the CBD, 22 May was declared International Day for Biological Diversity. The celebration of International Day for Biological Diversity is an opportunity to support and promote the CBD which advocates for the conservation of biodiversity and the sustainable use of all its components. In Croatia, 22 May is also the Croatian Nature Conservation Day.

The theme of this year’s Biodiversity Day is “Be part of the Plan“, a call to action for all stakeholders to implement the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, adopted on 19 December 2022 and aimed at halting the destruction of global ecosystems and wildlife.

“Can we save global ecosystems and with them the species we appreciate and the millions of other species, some of which could produce the food and medicine of tomorrow? The answer will lie in our ability to align our demands with the ability of nature to produce what we need and safely absorb what we throw away.”
