The beaver is the largest rodent in Europe. While it was almost driven to extinction in the past owing to fur hunting, today it is a protected species which has slowly but surely been returning to its former habitats.
Ten beaver lodges and around twenty beaver individuals have been found in the watercourses and lakes in the Plitvice Lakes. Beaver monitoring in the Plitvice Lakes began in 2019 and is ongoing today. OIKON d.o.o. and the employees of the Park’s expert service are monitoring and studying this species. The aim is to determine the number of individuals, the population status and the biology of this species in the Park area.
