CONSTRUCTION PRACTICES ON THE VELIKA POLJANA PLATEAU AT THE END OF THE 19th AND THE BEGINNING OF THE 20th CENTURY

At the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century, the fame and appeal of the Plitvice Lakes started to grow, which is also when they started to develop as a tourist destination. With the construction of roads and railways, they become easily accessible, and more and more entrepreneurs started building inns, lodges and shops. The largest number of such facilities can be found on the Velika Poljana plateau above Lake Kozjak, because it offers the best view of the lake. The facilities are mostly built using a combination of stone and wood, as these are the most readily available materials in this area.
