Josip Jović and the Plitvice Lakes Police Operation

Urednik News

‘Bloody Easter’ is a historic event and a turning point in the Homeland War, the first hint of the difficult path we would take to our independence and freedom, for which the Croatian people suffered many casualties, and Croatian police officer Josip Jović, who died at Plitvice Lakes at the age of 21, was the first among them.

‘Bloody Easter’ was a turning point in the Homeland War, marking the first sacrifice on Croatia’s path to independence. Croatian police officer Josip Jović, just 21 years old, was the first to give his life for freedom during the operation to reclaim Plitvice Lakes National Park.

The Croatian police played a crucial role in defending sovereignty, forming the foundation of the victorious Croatian Army. Recognizing the gravity of the moment, they stood ready to sacrifice everything. The Plitvice operation was their direct response to the occupation of the national park and the blockade of a key road connecting northern and southern Croatia.

Special forces from Rakitje, Lučko, and Kumrovec successfully carried out the mission, but at a cost—Jović was killed, and nine officers were wounded.

On that Easter morning, as heavy snow covered Plitvice and thick fog descended, gunfire erupted from the forest, striking the convoy of Croatian officers. The death of Josip Jović became a symbol of Croatia’s struggle. The shot that took his life was also an attack on Croatia’s rebirth, but from his sacrifice, and that of thousands of others, the nation rose again. After the tragedy of Vukovar, Croatia gained international recognition, and ultimate victory came with Operation Storm—forever honored by the tricolor flag flying high above Knin Fortress.

Josip Jović remains a symbol of patriotism, courage, and selfless devotion. His sacrifice became a powerful source of motivation for all Croatian soldiers fighting for independence. Today, he is remembered as an inspiration, especially to Croatian police officers who continue to serve with honor, protecting the people and borders of a free Croatia.

In his memory, a memorial center was opened in his hometown of Aržano, honoring him and all Croatian soldiers whose sacrifices granted us the freedom we cherish today.

May their love for Croatia and their willingness to sacrifice never be forgotten.
