In 1968, the first Plitvice Wedding was held under the Veliki slap waterfall.
This out-of-the-ordinary wedding ritual in nature and with nature was organised by a trained painter from Paris Budo Vlaisavljević – Modri, born in Plitvice, who married his young fellow citizen Christine in a heavenly setting.
The Plitvice Wedding was conceived as a promotional activity to present to the world as best as possible the Plitvice Lakes NP, which was then relatively unknown in other parts of the world. These weddings were performed from 1968 to 1990, with a total of 20 weddings of 177 couples. The couples mostly came from European countries, predominantly from the Netherlands and Germany. They were selected by readers of top-selling magazines from those countries. The wedding ceremony included a carriage ride to Entrance 1, a wedding under the Veliki slap waterfall, a walk along the Lower Lakes, a boat ride on Kozjak, lunch in Kozjačka draga, planting of a birch or pine tree in the Village of the Newly-weds on Medveđak, and a dinner party.
