The grasslands in the Plitvice Lakes National Park are the habitat of a number of bird species that nest, breed and find food there. Around 170 bird species have been found in the Park, and many of those can be seen in the grassland areas.
The BIOM association and the company for professional and scientific research Alectoris Birding d.o.o., in cooperation with the employees of the Park’s expert service, have been carrying out a project for monitoring target bird species populations bound to grassland, open mosaic and agricultural habitats. The monitoring has been ongoing for years.
It has been done by listening to birds at a particular point in the habitat, at dusk and dawn, without disturbing them.
The aim is to monitor the changes in the numbers of individuals and populations, and to identify and avoid potential dangers.
The following Natura 2000 species are of particular interest for nature protection: the barred warbler (Sylvia nisoria), the woodlark (Lullula arborea), the lesser grey shrike (Lanius minor), the red-backed shrike (Lanius collurio) and the Montagu’s Harrier (Circus pygargus).
