The International Day of Action for Rivers is celebrated every March 14 with the aim of raising awareness of the importance of rivers, through the implementation of various actions and events.
Rivers are the largest natural watercourses, and although they represent only a small part (about 0.0002%) of the total water mass on Earth, their network is like the vascular system of our planet. River systems are the largest biodiversity zones on Earth, but also the most intense human activities. Did you know that two million tons of sewage, industrial and agricultural waste are discharged into the world’s water every day? That’s why its time to save our rivers for the benefit of humanity.
On this day, people around the world gather to protect and celebrate rivers. We invite you to take action to protect, preserve or restore your rivers and streams. Be their voice by sharing your favorite personal stories about rivers on social media, whether it is related to a fun family picnic or any activities to save the rivers. If you want to accomplish more, write to relevant institutions, organize river cleanups, initiate the removal of non-functioning artificial barriers in rivers, or host workshops in your communities.
