The World Heritage Committee (WHC) inscribed this area as a natural heritage site on October 26, 1979, shortly after the adoption of the 1972 Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage.
The current criteria under which Plitvice Lakes National Park is recognized as a site of Outstanding Universal Value are vii, viii, and ix, which generally describe areas that contain:
- (vii) outstanding natural phenomena or areas of exceptional natural beauty and aesthetic importance;
- (viii) outstanding examples representing major stages of Earth’s history, including significant ongoing geological processes in the development of landforms or significant geomorphic or physiographic features;
- (ix) outstanding examples representing ongoing ecological and biological processes in the evolution and development of terrestrial, freshwater, coastal, and marine ecosystems, and communities of plants and animals.
