Renewed mill`s power facility in Korana

The mill in village Korana represents an important traditional infrastructure as a part of the Plitvice Lakes National Park`s cultural heritage. Built in the second half of the 20th Century, and still functioning in the present time, the mill presents a traditional way of grain grinding. The renovation of the mill`s building was performed in 2002, however the mill`s power facility was not renewed for 50 or more years. Considering that the parts of the power facility were in very bad condition, we approached designing and renovating that part of the mill. Special challenge was in creating the design because there were no previous designs, and all the parts needed to be recorded thoroughly and transferred to paper in order to make new designs to construct all the specific parts. The second challenge was to find an artisan who can construct this, because this type of work is not represented anymore.

Finally, we managed to resolve everything, and when the Korana river`s water level decreased significantly, we installed the new power facility. The two water wheels with axles, water scaffolds and floodgates were renewed so that the mill can function unhindered for many more years. Additionally, as the complete mill`s facility was disassembled, this was an opportunity to perform millstones sharpening (Croatian: klepanje).
