In the Plitvice Lakes National park, the Park`s employees started in April a monitoring and rescue mission for amphibians on local road! The dedicated employees first installed the fence at eight transects along the local road for panoramic vehicles, from the location of Rječica River to Labudovac. Behind the fence, we placed capturing pots and funnel traps, representing spots for capturing amphibians during their migration activities, with special focus on Fire salamander (Salamandra salamandra).
The spring period is migration main period when animals from their terrestrial resting habitats move towards freshwater habitats where they reproduce. The transect tours will take place in the morning and in the evening, depending on the favourable weather conditions. This monitoring has a goal of saving animals from being run over, but also to gather data that will represent a basis for finding permanent solutions for safe passage of the amphibians across the panoramic vehicle`s road.
We are looking forward to the arrival of raindrops, as do our amphibians!
